AURELIUS establishes its tenth global office in Tokyo

  • AURELIUS is to establish a permanent presence in Tokyo, Japan, its tenth office after Munich, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Milan, Luxembourg, Malta, New York and Chicago
  • Further international expansion follows the successful fundraise of AURELIUS Opportunities V last year, which has increased AURELIUS’ firepower significantly to €1.5bn, and expanded its geographic investment remit to North America
  • In Japan, the strategic objective is to source acquisitions of international businesses from Japanese sellers
  • Appointment of experienced investment professional Eiji Shibata as Head of AURELIUS Japan

Tokyo/London, June 1, 2026 – AURELIUS, a global private equity investor distinguished and widely recognised for its operational approach, welcomes Eiji Shibata, an experienced private equity investment professional, into its ranks. Eiji will be responsible for establishing a permanent presence for AURELIUS in Japan, and for sourcing and executing international carve-outs from Japanese corporates.

Eiji is a highly skilled, bilingual investment professional with almost 25 years of private equity and M&A advisory experience at leading global firms, including Goldman Sachs, Barclays and Permira. He joins AURELIUS from Japan Post Investment Corporation (JPIC), one of Asia’s leading LPs which manages the largest co-investment fund in Japan.

AURELIUS has completed many transactions with Japanese counterparties seeking to sell their international assets. Most recent successes have been the acquisition of Teijin Limited’s North America business, now renamed CSP, and Resonac Holdings Corporation’s FIAMM Energy Technology business in Italy. These deals took place against the background of a corporate Japan more and more focused on capital efficiency, and increasingly active selling non-core assets. As Managing Director and Head of Japan for AURELIUS, Eiji will lead its private equity investment activities in the region and act as the first point of contact for banks advising on corporate carve-outs of international businesses.

“I am convinced that Japan is a great place for AURELIUS to do business. So many large companies here are rethinking their international strategies and footprints, spurred into action by market volatility and shareholder activism. I am also encouraged by the success AURELIUS had opening two new offices in the US in the last two years – the team I am joining clearly knows how to nurture and support new offices. This is a new professional challenge for me, and I will embrace it,” says Eiji Shibata.

Tristan Nagler, Partner and Head of AURELIUS Investment Advisory, adds: “AURELIUS has always had a strong instinct to build solid local presence and network in its focus regions. As Japan became an increasingly important source of international assets for us, our natural response was to identify a talented and experienced PE professional to establish a local office. I am delighted that we have found Eiji, and look forward to working with him on many successful transactions in Japan.”

Dirk Markus, AURELIUS Co-founder, comments: “AURELIUS’ foundational belief has always been that sustainable value creation happens by reducing complexity and optimising operations. Proximity to the sellers we buy from, to the companies we own, and to the buyers we sell to, is an essential prerequisite to achieving these objectives. Given our very good experiences with Japanese sellers, and our confidence that there are many more deals for us to be made, establishing an office in Japan is the right decision, as well as yet another strategic step for AURELIUS to become a truly global investor. Welcome Eiji to AURELIUS, our new man in Japan and the latest senior hire for our global Investment Team.“

This further international expansion follows the successful fundraise last year of AURELIUS Opportunities V, which, including co-investment commitments, provides for €1.5bn of fresh equity firepower.
